Did you know Old Age Security (OAS) has nothing to do with your work history? 🤔
Unlike CPP, OAS entitlement is based strictly on your Canadian residency. Here’s what you need to know:
✅ Qualification: 40 years of residence after age 18 = full OAS benefit (10-year minimum for partial).
✅ Age Window: Start at 65 or defer payments up to age 70.
✅ The Deferral Boost: Delaying adds 0.6%/month (7.2%/yr)—up to a 36% permanent increase at 70.
⚠️ The Catch: It’s taxable income, and high net income can trigger the federal OAS clawback.
Deciding when to start taking CPP and OAS depends heavily on your other income sources and overall decumulation strategy.
